Swelling: Swelling in a joint can result from many things such as arthrits, infections or systemic medical conditions. I would recommend evaluation by your primary care physician.

Many reasons.....: Sudden swelling of any joint without injury may be caused by many things. It is best to get a consultation, x-rays, circulation tests, etc. Common causes are gout and tendonitis. Again, it is best to get a consultation correlating history and physical findings. Good luck!
