Upto a year: Ankle fractures injury more than just the bone but the soft tissue around the bone. Can causes scar tissue and disrupts the local circulation as well (veins and lymph vessel). The result is swelling which is normal but can take up to a year to resolve and ultimately may stay thickened or swollen forever. The foot/ankle is the lowest part of your body so fluid tends to accumulate there to start with.
