A member asked:

I have an overactive thyroid and will start radioiodine treatment soon. is it safe? what are side effects?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

A good treatment: Radioactive iodine has been used for hyperthyoidism for many years. The radioactivity is concentrated in the thyroid and there is no real cancer of birth defect concern. After treatment, your thyroid may feel a little tender, and your blood thyroid level may increase a bit. This is usually mild/minimal. Have b-blockers handy. Maybe methimazole. Watch for hypothyroidism (about 3 months).
