A member asked:

What causes results for whether you have cancer or not?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Biopsy...: In most instances, it is necessary to study cells or tissues taken from a mass lesion to decide if it is tumor (versus another cause like infection, etc...) and to decide if the tumor is benign or malignant. This work is done by pathologists using microscopy and other techniques in medical laboratories. Imaging studies and blood tests are also valuable in some instances.
