Can you please define ovulation, how does it exactly work?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Ovulation: Women with regular cycles, have a surge in lh hormone levels that matures and ovulates (releases) the egg 24 - 48 hours later. This is the time you can get pregnant. Signs that confirm ovulation are change in cervical mucus or some abdominal discomfort. If the egg isn't fertilized, your period comes ~14 days after ovulation. In women with irregular cycles it's hard to predict when this occurs.
