Diuretics & fluids: A normal adult should drink about 2 liters of fluid a day to maintain healthy body functioning. As we get older we drink less and have less thirst, so it reduces to about 1.5 liters a day. Generally, when you are put on a diuretic, the amount of fluid that is recommended does not change. In fact, if you restrict your fluid intake and take a diuretic, you are at risk for serious dehydration.

Depends: For pts with a severe cardiomyopathy and a very weak heart too much water can cause pts to become short of breath and develop chf. The pts are usually told a specific amt of water they can have to avoid this. The more accurate measure is to weigh yourself daily in the morning. If you gain more than 5 # in 24 hrs from your "dry" weight you may be taking on more water and salt than u should.
