A member asked:

Can someone tell me the difference between horizontal and vertical stretch marks? which ones come from gaining weight and which ones come from growing taller?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Either: In general stretch marks appear as a result of increased tension on skin from rapid changes in weight or growth. Horizontal stretch marks on the back are usually from growth in height. Vertical stretch marks on abdomen or thighs are usually from weight gain. Axillary striae can be from either cause.
