Depends on site: If the stone is in the ureter (kidney to bladder tube), there is something call "peristalsis", which helps move things along. That would mean a periodicity to the pain: every few minutes. However, if the stone is in the kidney, and blocking the exit, it may be a constant pain; if it is in the urethra (exiting), it may be excrutiating and constant!
