A member asked:

Might it happen that a person with graves disease be able to take medicine all their life such as ptu (propylthiouracil)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

You Can but/choices: About30% of patients will remission after prolonged treatment with ptu (propylthiouracil), (propylthiouracil) but you can not predict who will go into remission. Most endocrinologist recommend radioactive iodine therapy if there is no remission after one or two years if there is no contraindication for rai therapy, or if one can not tolerate ptu (propylthiouracil) due to side effects. After rai you may need thyroid supplements all your life which is simpler.
