Oral herpes virus: Cold sores are caused by a very common type of herpes virus that causes infection around the mouth. Many people have been exposed to this virus by oral secretions from another individual (sharing cups or kissing are common modes of transmission). The virus may cause recurrent symptoms in some people. There is no current cure, but some treatments for this who expeience frequent outbreaks.
