Osteoporosis: Normal bones contain a certain level of "calium" as determined by a bone mineral density test such as a dexa. Women with an adequate intake of calcium are continually storing calcium in their bones, until the age of 33. After 33, they are continually losing calcium from their bones, even with adequate intake of calcium. If the bone mineral density gets too low, the risk for fractures goes up.

Osteoporosis: Excessive loss of calcium from the bones is called osteoporosis. Women with osteoporosis are at significantly increased risk for fractures. About 300, 000 women die each year due to complications from those fractures.
