As tolerated: Sounds like you had a laparoscopic incisional hernia repair. This is quite painful, often more so than the operation that caused the hernia. Try aspercreme or myoflex cream. Just rub it on your belly where it hurts. It will get better with time, usually 3-6 weeks. Hang in there!

Up to you. : Everyone feels pain differently. I have some patients who are back to laying on their side or other ( Light weight) activities in a few days. And others who can't for weeks. As soon as you are comfortable you can do it.
