Mucolytic meds: Generally in smokers it is common to have chronic bronchitis and they may require prescription medications. Acute bronchitis or the occasional phlegm may initially be treated with Guaifenesin (mucinex (guaifenesin) or robitussin), if the phlegm appears yellow to green and thick it may require the addition of an antibiotic by your doctor. Colored mucous, chest pain, fever should prompt a doctor visit.
