No worries: It is not uncommon for a person to cough up phlegm with a small amount of blood streaks in it. The source of the blood is usually from the throat or upper airways and the result of persistent coughing or inflammation in the throat. Coughing up pure blood can be a sign of a serious problem. Sounds like you have bronchitis, which is usually viral. Robitussin-DM contains a safe cough suppressant.

See a doctor: usually if it happens once there is nothing to worry about, most likely it is secondary to dry cough. if it keep happening you need evaluation by a lung specialist. see your PCP
