Many things: Trauma can cause compression fractures which can be painful until healing occurs. Degenerative changes as we age with spur formation may also lead to spinal stenosis. Infection can cause osteomyelitis of the vertebrae usually localized to one or two levels.Primary tumor is rare but metastatic disease can go to the spine.A lot of congenitial abnormalities with malformation of spine also occurs, .
