Not all genetic: Although there is some genetic predisposition of some family groups, this is not an exclusively genetic disease. All it takes to develop dm1 is the loss of Insulin production within the pancreas. This has been associated with developing an auto-immune antibody after some viral infections and these antibodies kill off the Insulin producing cells.
