Edema: Edema is the term that is used when referring to spinal cord swelling. This can occur, for example, after an injury. At the cellular level, this means that the cell membranes become 'leaky' and some of the intracellular fluid spills out. This leads to additional pressure on the surrounding nerves. There are two main types-cytotoxic and vasogenic edema. This depends on the cause of injury.
