Air is bad if open: If the incision is well approximated and sealed, then the gauze is there to absorb the occasional drainage as it heals and protects the incision from trauma. If there is any separation, then the air causes a scab which slows down healing and so, the dressing should be maintained until it is healed. If the gauze is painful, then there are a lot of great dressings that are easy to apply and remove.

Keep them covered..: If you were told to keep them covered then you should do so. Call you surgeon's office for instructions before leaving a wound open to air, you could become infected.
