Call dentist: I'd you are having severe pain or swelling you need to call the dentist that did the extraction. For the time being ice pack 20 min on and 20 min off will help ease the pain from inflammation. You can take 800 mg ibuprophen and add 2 tylenol (acetaminophen) for additional pain relief.

Call DDS-Emerg Visit: If the extraction was a couple of days ago or more, it sounds like you might have what we call a dry socket, where the blood clot is lost & the bone is exposed. If that's the case, the dentist will pack the socket with special medication which will resume the healing process & you'll get relief, usually within hours. Regardless, call your dentist for an appointment asap, and follow his\her advice.
