Sprain: You have lateral ankle instability and that's the reason for all the sprains. It is likely two of the 3 major ligaments are either stretched or ruptured which is verified on mri. To prevent to a surgical procedure can be performed to place ligaments in their corrected position. Most my patients say its like a " bionic ankle" because it feels so strong.

Ankle Instability: It sounds like you have chronic ankle instability. If you have exhausted nonsurgical remedies such as bracing, physical therapy, strengthening, etc, then you should consult your physician for a foot and ankle surgeon. You may need a surgical procedure to stabilize your chronic ankle instability. I hope this helps, good luck!

OTC Ankle brace: You're better off using an otc brace or splint that trying to tape yourself up at home. It's not as easy as the professional trainers make it look. You could also just see a podiatrist - many of us stock simple braces for simple sprains. The ones podiatrists stock are better than most found in stores.
