RICE to start: Rest, ice, compression, and elevation ("rice") are all good things to do for acute sprains of almost all joints including your knee. Mild sprains should resolve in days to weeks. If the pain, weakness, or instability ("looseness") persists, you will need to be re-evaluated.

Knee sprain: You generally cannot affect the rate of healing of your ligaments or tendons. You can however continue to exercise your knee in a low impact manner to keep your muscles in reasonable shape. A brace is often needed to support your knee during the healing process.

Time: Sprains can take 4-6 weeks to heal. Rest, ice, and a brace may also help. Physical therapy also can help you rehab faster.
