Get it checked: Ordinary X-rays will not show injury to internal ligaments ,meniscus injury etc , see you doctor for orthopedic referral .

Its time for a Mri: Chronic knee pain implies a structural problem. Plain weight bearing xrays can evaluate joint line space, patellar tilt. An MRI can evaluate for a meniscus or cartilage injury which sounds more likely. A sports or PMR MR can help look for other causes and complete treatment. PT and core conditioning are likely to be recommended.
