Hinged brace: If you truly have a severe or"bad" ligament sprain treatment depends on the ligament injured. Typically with an acute sprain a hinged brace will give the best support but the actual type should be based on the ligament injured. Therefore you need a more extensive workup by an orthopedic surgeon to determine if there is any instability.

Knee injury brace: Not enough info for me to answer, so ask the doctor who made diagnosis. Knee braces can prevent medial lateral motion, stop rotation, elevate the patella (knee cap), prevent forward or backward motion, and off load the weight bearings races. The wrng brace won't help and may cause pain. There are specialized orthotic shops which will help you choose the best one, but diagnosis is mandatory.
