A member asked:

Iron low 37, fer level 10.45, doc wants me to have infed iv treatment. really necessary? scare of side effects. are my levels dangerously low?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Low.: Maybe not necessary. If you have no contraindication to taking or absorbing oral iron and your red blood cell count is not down the the point that you are symptomatic then oral iron replacement is a good idea. Iron is best absorbed in an acid environment. Omeprazole reduces acid secretion by the stomach so that iron is not absorbed as well - take your iron with a vit c tab.
