Tendonitis arthritis: Tendonitis at the front of the ankle may develop from underlying arthritis or may be aggravated by a flexible foot allowing the arch to collapse to strain the surrounding soft tissue and joints. You will need an examination and xray to evaluate your problem.

Could be ...: Could be many things: most common cause of pain in the top of the foot is arthritis or inflammation of a nerve. Unilateral (just one side) swelling of the ankle is often caused by arthritis as well but sometimes is due to a blood clot. See a doctor to get it checked out by exam and a least an x-ray.
