No: While an ultrasound done at 20 weeks can pick up many major abnormalities, subtle heart defects, cleft palates, and chromosomal problems may still be missed. The experience of the technician and the doctor reading the results is also a factor.

Yes: Hi, many abnormalities can be diagnosed by a high level or level II ultrasound. These scans are most often performed by obgyn's with special training called maternal fetal medicine doctors or mfm or perinatologist. They have attended special training in obstetrics and specialize in high level ultrasound. A scan between 17 and 22 weeks is now considered standard of care by most.
