See details: That sounds like a prepatellar bursitis. If so, a simple aspiration and cortisone injection should resolve the problem. See you family doc or an orthopedist.

Bursitis: Not really. Bursitis is an inflammatory issue and not really "damage". Trauma can also cause fluid build up in the bursa. Kneeling (carpet layers knee) is also commonly associated. Treatment is usually observation. Ice, compression, nsaids are conservative options. Aspiration, cortisone injection, and surgery are more aggressive options.
