Heat & Ibuprofen: Ibuprofen should help alleviate the pain. The dosing depends on age/weight. Don't take if on blood thinners, pregnant, kidney, liver problems or questionably allergic without discussing with your doctor. Local heat and saltwater rinses might be helpful. If one sees redness or swelling around the base of the tooth contact a dentist asap as it might indicate an abscess.

Go to the Dentist: Many of us have experienced intermittent pains in a tooth that seem to go away by themselves if we rinse with warm salt water or brush and floss it really well. These may be caused by local irritants. If the pains persist however i would recommend seeing your dentist. This may be due to an infection that requires professional help.

???: Isn't that the reason for going to the dentist? Maybe i don't understand why you think you need to do this before going.

See Dentist ASAP: Go see a dentist. Early care can save you lots of time, pain and money. If the pain subsides many time the decay penetrates the nerve and the abscess hurts initially and then actually reduces the pain. At this point the lack of pain is not a good sign. You are in need of something more than a filling or a crown. A root canal with a crown, or extraction & implant may be your only options.

Toothaches: Over the counter pain medications can help you with mild toothaches. More severe toothaches associated with an abscessed or a dying nerve may require a narcotic pain medication and antibiotics. If a dentist can't see you after hours for a severe toothache, you can be seen at the er, but you'll pay a big price to get a prescription.

Not your job: It's the dentist's job to treat your toothache. There's no otc cure, no do-it-yourself remedy. Tooth ache probably means infection that will not go away by itself. If left untreated it can only spread. Try advil (ibuprofen) and cold compresses to take the edge off until you get to the dentist, but the dentist must treat your infection...You can't.

Tough request: If it was easy to resolve a toothache, you wouldn't need the dentist, right? Make going to your dentist a priority above all other things and you will be feeling better in no time. In the meantime, take OTC NSAIDs to help control the pain.

See DDS ASAP: Depending on the reason for the toothache, need more information. Is this related to decay or trauma? Is this a periodontal issue? You may be able to take a prescribed antibiotic depending on the situation. It is advisable to see dentist ASAP for a definitive diagnosis and treatment.
