Doctor Exam: Neck pain after a mechanical injury is properly evaluated by a doctor, who can decide if only soft tissues like muscles and ligaments are injured or whether skeletal tissues like bones and disks are injured. These latter tissues often require imaging studies to determine what therapies are needed. Referral of pain to the shoulder(s) or upper extremities suggests need for emergent attention.
