Kidney stone: It may never cause problems or it might pass into the ureter at some point and cause pain and possibly some blood in the urine.

A small kidney stone: Is the same thing as a calculus. It may stay where it is for years, pass without symptoms if it is small enough, grow larger or even get stuck in the ureter (the tube leading from the kidney to the bladder). If it gets stuck, you would experience pain and perhaps blood in the urine, and would need to be treated.
