Pediatrics 47 years experience
Stool retention: I would have her evaluated by a developmental pediatrician. My evaluation of such cases includes a general & dietary history, time of onset, previous treatments & successes. An exam that focuses on the abdomen & rectum, abdominal x-ray & occasionally a contrast enema. Most kids who reach this level of dysfunction need a bowel rehab plan that requires 6m of effort & lots of tears & frustration.Good luck.
