G6PD: Hereditary g6pd is suspected if someone has a low blood count, a high reticulocyte count (newly forming red cells) and some degree of jaundice (yellowness). It can be associated with exposure to drugs as sulfa meds, antimalarials, "moth balls" and even from infection. Can also affect WBC in mediterranean form. Fava beans can also be the cause in some people.

G6PD is....: An hereditary enzyme deficiency. Inheritance is x-linked, so usually not significant in girls. Cells need g6pd to create reducing equivalents to deal with oxidant stress. Patients are sensitive to oxidant stress and must avoid ingestion of foods and meds that are oxidants. The most common manifestation of g6pd deficiency is hemolytic anemia following oxidant exposure.
