Too many: Bleeding gums are a symptom of many things besides poor oral hygiene or a tooth infection. Two other common reason for someone your age are erupting wisdom teeth or a vitamin deficiency. I have too often seen young adults first or second year from home not eating right. This will show up in the gums.

See a dentist: The most common cause of bleeding gums is gum disease. Please see your dentist for a check up. Other tooth related causes can be cavities, infection or fractured teeth. Medical causes of bleeding gums can include blood thinner medication like Coumadin (warfarin) or blood disorders like hemophilia. If there is no dental cause of the bleeding gums, medical causes should be considered.
