Yes, GGT may be high: Ggt is found in the liver cells that are associated with the bile system. There are many conditions that may cause an elevation of ggt. You need to see your doctor. If he/she can not determine the cause then see a GI specialist knowledgeable about the liver. A partial list of common conditions that can elevate GGT include fatty liver, alcoholism, and gallstones. Again, please see a doctor.

GGT: Lab reference ranges may vary from lab to lab. Elevated GGT is typically due to liver and biliary tract diseases. When alkaline phosphatase is elevated, GGT is often checked to verify the cause of elevated alkaline phosphatase, which can be caused by bone diseases while GGT is more specific to the liver and biliary diseases. Ggt can also be elevated due to alcohol consumption and chf.

Let's talk about it: Ggt tends to rise in people who drink a lot of alcohol before other liver enzymes do. There's also a genetic trait that's not rare in which healthy people run an extremely high GGT throughout their lives, with other 'zymes normal. A couple of times a year, I have to write courtesy letters pointing this out to substance-abuse compliance people.
