It is high!: Ggt comes from the liver, but not the liver cells. It comes from the biliary tract and the fibrous tissue holding the liver together. Most common causes for elevations include gall bladder issues, but it can be raised in certain autoimmune diseases, primary biliary cirrhosis. It can also indicate a mass in the liver. I would recommend additional blood work and a liver/gb ultrasound!

Maybe: I am going to assume that all the rest of your liver function tests were normal and that you are in robust good health. I am also going to assume you drink little or no alcohol; if you are drinking quite a bit, this is your heads-up to cut down or stop. Maybe one person in 1000 has a genetic kink to run a high ggt; these need to be recognized if GGT is used to screen for sobriety compliance.

Family Practice: Ggt is produced in many tissues of the body with particularly high concentrations in the liver and gallbladder. Testing is done to evaluate diseases of the liver and gallbladder . Levels may be followed when there has been liver damage from alcohol abuse.
