Yes: "random flip outs" are unusual. If they are episodic in nature - every few days to every few weeks or months, they could be part of a bipolar disorder - like "rapid cycling" type, bipolar type ii, or bipolar i. If your friend is running in the "hypomanic" mode - where there is a baseline reservoir of irritability, any little thing could send him/her over the edge.
