Time: The nervous system is a remarkable combination of fragility and resilience. It takes time (and therapy) to recover from brain injury, and there is (unfortunately) no way of knowing how fast or how complete the recovery will be.

Heals itself.: We know now that the brain tries to heal itself. This happens by healthy portions of the brain taking over the function of the parts affected by the stroke. This takes time and simulation (thus the importance of physical, occupational, and speech/language therapy).
