Asthma definition: Asthma is a chronic (long-lasting) inflammatory disease of the airways. In those susceptible to asthma, this inflammation causes the airways to spasm and swell periodically so that the airways narrow. The individual then must wheeze or gasp for air. Obstruction to air flow either resolves spontaneously or responds to a wide range of treatments. Plum. Function tests can make the diagnosis.

Not all patients with asthma cough. Cough can be a sign of asthma however and is generally not associated with production of mucous. This may be a sign of allergy or chronic cough productive of mucous can be a sign of COPD or emphysema. If this is a new cough with mucous it can be a sign of active infection. Asthma part 2: No specific mucus is found in asthma. Peak flows or pulmonary function tests, response to bronchodilators and steroids , and the history of recurrent episodes triggered by infections or allergies make the diagnosis. Not associated to smoking. Most start in childhood and may disappear during puberty.
