Combination therapy: If shingles is caught early, antiviral oral therapy is started immediately. The rash is usually painful and itchy, which can be treated by subdermal injection of local anesthetic with steroid. Finally, sympathetic blockade can help early on, so see a pain management physician. They can also manage the pain after the rash is gone (post herpetic neuralgia).
