It is possible: That this pain is actually coming from the extraction site and not the adjacent tooth. With out a proper clinical exam it is difficult to determine where the pain could be coming from. Best to see your doctor that removed the tooth for proper examination.

A few possibilities-: It could be referred pain from the extraction site, pressure applied to the adjacent tooth inadvertently during the extraction, or perhaps a problem with the adjacent tooth itself. You should call the dentist who did the extraction, advise him\her of the problem and ask to be seen for an evaluation.
