A member asked:

Do you think i should go for a root canal or an implant?

Interesting: It seems that the success rate for implants is about the same as for root canal tx., or maybe even a little higher. If the tooth would need a crown after the endo, you may be better off with the implant. The costs would be close.

Depends: This has to be decided on a case by case basis. In my personal opinion, if there is a high probably of long term success for a root canal, i would save the tooth and do the root canal and crown.

Great question...: I would allow your dentist in this consideration. If the treatment with a root canal and any other care the tooth may need results in a significantly compromised result, then i would look into extraction and a dental implant.

Denpends: It all depends on your specific situation. Is it the first time root canal on that tooth? What is the condition of the tooth in question and what is the prognosis on it? If it is a second time rootcanal treatment and the tooth has less than ideal prognosis than an implant is a much better option. See a dentist and explore your options.

More info needed: Amount of tooth structure left? Anterior or posterior? Amount of bone available? Condition of adjacent teeth? Although neither procedure is 100% guaranteed, i personally tend to try to save natural teeth before placing an implant, unless the tooth in question is so compromised that it is too risky to save for the long term.
