Depends on treatment: Without treatment, HIV is fatal in a period of 8 to 10 years. With current multi-drug therapies and close medical supervision, a person diagnosed with early HIV infection today who adheres closely to a good treatment regimen can live for several decades. These medications are expensive and require monitoring. Some of the drugs have serious side effects. Have safe sex. Always use a condom.
