Hysteria : Is an outdated term that is no longer used by professionals as a diagnostic term. It has been replaced by several somatoform & dissociative disorders. It originated when certain emotional conditions were thought to be particular to women because of disturbances in the uterus (greek "hystera" = uterus). In common use, it just means extreme or out of control emotions or fear.
