ON AVERAGE, COVID-19 caused by Omicron tends to be milder. But there's still a range from totally asymptoamtic to severe infection, and plenty of Omicron infections require hospitalization and sometimes are fatal, especially in people with underlying medical conditions and/or who have not been vaccinated. If you haven't been vaccinated, do it ASAP!

I fully agree that, so far, reports of the Omicron variant indicate a milder condition than Delta. Also, at this point, no clear cause of death from this variant either. But the high infectivity could well prompt a panic in some. In my opinion, one should protect via vaccination, and it appears that booster shots also protect against Omicron.
