No one knows: Higher rates of obesity certainly correlate with increasing incidence of type 1 diabetes. However, this is an autoimmune disease. There are identified genes regarding risk for type 1 dm, but even so, it requires an environmental trigger. The environmental trigger(s) is unknown. Even with identical twins, if one gets type 1 dm, the other only has 40% chance to get it also.
