Nobody knows: Type 1 dm is an autoimmune disease occurring when an environmental trigger(s) sets off genes in the body to make antibodies against insulin-producing cells. Even with the genetic predisposition, there is only a 40% chance of getting diabetes. If an identical twin has type 1 diabetes, the other won't necessarily get it.
