Is it possible to get a low blood platelet count if you are sick from a cold or stomach virus?

Acute illnesses: Can cause slightly low platelet counts, but it depends on how low. If it is only slightly depressed, have the test repeated after you recover from your cold or virus. If it is really low, ask your doctor for referral to a hematologist.
