Direct Measurement: Ldl cholesterol (ldl-c) is usually estimated by an equation. It can also be directly measured (dldl-c). However, because the cholesterol carried in LDL particles is highly variable, both types of ldl-c test are often inaccurate. The best measure of LDL quantity is LDL particle number (apob or NMR LDL particle number). When cholesterol and particle number differ, risk tracks with particle number.
