Complicated answer: Total cholesterol is comprised of cholesterol contained in multiple particles. These are: 1. Hdl (good) 2. Ldl (very bad) 3. Vldl (bad) 4. Idl (bad) 5. Chylomicrons and remnants (bad) 6. Lp(a) one easy way to assess your total bad cholesterol is to calculate non-hdl cholesterol by subtracting HDL from total. Some studies say this is better than ldl. Ideal levels of this are less than 130 mg/dl.
