A 41-year-old member asked:

Can there be a way to know if you are immune to hepatitis c?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Camilla Graham
Infectious Disease 27 years experience
Never truly immune: About 25% of people exposed to hepatitis c will develop antibodies but their RNA pcr test will be negative because their immune system spontaneously cleared it. However, if these people get exposed again, they might develop chronic infection. So there is no true immunity against chronic infection.

Yes: It's possible to have hepatitis c without any symptoms and the only way to know if you are still infected is to have a blood test to check for hepatitis c.
Dr. Ed Friedlander

Absolutely. This situation is actually more common than its clearing itself.

Yes: About 25% of people will spontaneously eliminate hepatitis c from their livers by their own immune response. However, for the majority of people who are not do fortunate and develop chronic infection, the only way to cure hcv is antiviral medications. High dose intravenous milk thistle may help, but blueberry extract, milk thistle pills, chinese herbs etc will not cure hcv.

A 31-year-old member asked:

What can someone do if they are suffering from hepatitis c?

Dr. Camilla Graham

Stop alcohol: The first thing is stop alcohol until you find out how much damage your liver has suffered. Make sure you have been vaccinated against hepatitis a and b if not previously exposed. Go to a specialist who can help you figure out the kind of hepatitis c you have (genotype) and how much scarring (fibrosis) there is. This can be done with a blood test. These will help you know how and when to be cured.
